This past weekend my mother, grandmother, and younger cousin came to visit. This was particularly exciting because I feel as though I have not had the opportunity to see my family since going abroad (I also spent my summer at Arcadia). They arrived Saturday morning with a large cooler full of food for the apartment… awesome! After hugs, I was sure to have coffee and donuts ready for them before heading to the train station. My mom really wanted to see how I travel and experience the city as a student. We walked from Market East to Independence Hall where we took a tour and stopped at the Liberty Bell. My cousin is a fourth grade student and is currently learning about the founding of America in history, so this was also an educational trip.
After Independence Hall we headed towards South Street for lunch. We had the classic cheesesteaks and walked almost the entire length of South Street (much to grandma’s chagrin). We then tried to go to the Apple store so I could get the new iPhone 4S, but unfortunately the line was around the block. After a quick stop at the shops at Liberty Place, we then went to City Hall and Love Park for a photo op. Reading Terminal Market was our last stop before dragging ourselves back to the train station.
Upon arriving back at my apartment, I made my family dinner and my mom prepared us a casserole for later in the week. It was fun to show my family how independent I’ve become. After dinner, we went to the fireworks the Arcadia displayed and Casino Mania in the Castle (I’m surprisingly good at Blackjack). My family decided to head to their hotel after a few rounds of bingo, but I stayed to help the OSE clean up and walk back with my roommate who is one of their work study students.
Then next day my family picked me up to go to the church where I worship while at school. I loved that they finally got to meet some of the people who were most important in my smooth transition into college life. After church we had lunch and said our goodbyes. I will miss them until Thanksgiving.
This is my family.
