February 13, 2011

It's hard to believe that I have been outside of the United States for 6 days now. The wait at the airport was an awesome time to get to know the other FYSAE students and Arcadians studying at Stirling University. The actual plane ride was another story- overall it was good, but the seats were uncomfortable and the landing was pretty bumpy. Once arriving at the Edinburgh airport, we were met by Anna West, the study abroad coordinator for students from AU studying in Scotland. We took a short bus ride (via pubic transportation) to the city center and then walked a few blocks (in the rain, with all of our luggage) to our hotel. At this point it was around 10 am and everyone was exhausted and not all of the rooms were ready. We all put our luggage in each other's rooms and were free for the afternoon. After much help, a group of us immediately headed to a cell phone store to purchase phones to call home. The next few days were filled with orientation and exploring Edinburgh.
After 3 days in Edinburgh, we all boarded a bus to Stirling for the homestay. Almost no one was with the family that was assigned to them. For example, my paper said I was to stay with Helen, but I ended up with Isabel. Either way, it was great. Nothing beats a home cooked meal. These days were filled with Stirling Castle, the Wallace Monument, shopping in the city, and pubs.
We then (finally!) made it to Stirling University, or Uni. We were greeted by various members of the halls in which we live. The good majority of that day was spent unpacking, shopping, and getting things together for the semester. At night, the FYSAE students were all in different places- some went to a club, others to a pub, some stayed in at parties, and some just slept.
